Local players (left to right) Steve Hanning, Mark Fearnley, Justin Barron, Dave Treloar (team scorer) and Taylor Reid from the Alberton Darts Association and sponsored by Deadeye Darts have set a record for the 20,001 Challenge held in Yarram on Friday 20th Nov.

Abiding by clearly defined guidelines the local lads lined up against 10 other teams of four to establish a time to beat of  74min 18sec.

Time penalties were applied for incorrect score calculations and an infringement line was set 1 meter behind the oche for the next thrower to address safety issues.

The timed event was run to pulsating Trance music throughout, with the occasional Edith Piaf track thrown in to rattle the brain.

The first three teams to finish were all subject to close examination of their score sheets and the winner announced after time penalties were applied.            learn how it works

Overview of the 20,001 Challenge

The 20,001 Challenge was created as a fun and challenging event to break with the usual issues of Round Robin or Knockout, Seeding and Crossovers, Rankings and Qualifiers. The 20,001 is one darts event where players can let their hair down and just concentrate on having a great time.

In creating the Guidelines of the 20,001 first priority was safety for all at the event. Since this is something that juniors as well as the disabled may like to try at some point we needed to establish a common ground for safety.

For obvious reasons only one team can play on each board. The use of an Infringement Line protects the thrower from over zealous team-mates who might otherwise pin their ears to the board before their return across the oche.

The event commences with a group countdown and is accompanied by pulsating music as the timers start. Each team provides their own scorer, since time penalties apply for incorrect calculations it is a responsibilty that must be taken by each team and not taken on by the host or venue.

Teams of four pound the board for well over an hour whilst an interested crowd of revellers and supporters cheer on their preferred team. Most venues can accommodate a few teams at least giving good numbers for fund raising or end of years celebrations held within a party-like atmosphere.

As teams break into the final 1000 they indicate to the crowd, who can then knowingly await the end result. The 20,001 is concluded after the third team hits their double.Time penalties are then added and winner announced.

Benalla Challenge

Yarram's 20001 Record Holders travelled to Benalla on Feb 26th  to meet the challenge of serveral local teams keen to take the record north.

The Yarram lads - minus their usual scorer, rotated between throws to record each score while three players remained throwing at all times.

Yarram were pushed every step of the way by a strong Benalla side. Even when both teams were down to their last 1000 points it was impossible to determine who was ahead.

A quick peg within 3 darts by Yarram's Mark Fearnley saw the team first over the line followed a few minutes later by Benalla who struggled briefly on double one.

A new fastest time disappointingly reverted to 9 seconds over the record after one crucial scoring error and a time penalty was applied.

Nevertheless the Yarram locals had a fun weekend and now look forward to challengers coming to meet them locally to test their speed.
